While I don't want to criticize my beloved Sofia Vergara, I think it's a bit run-of-the-mill to showcase her impossible body in yet another telenovela-ready body-con dress. So let's focus on this coat instead. When the Pritchetts sneak into the Dunphy house and she's dressed...like Little Red Riding Hood. Minus the hood. Gloria picks the lock without breaking a sweat while knocking it out of the park with this fire engine red spring trench over a blue dress featuring black octopi-inspired tentacles. She springs the door open with a cool "no questions" directed at Jay and Manny. Guys, I'm convinced she has a back story where she's a paid assassin for the Yakuza. — Ritchie Po

Mr Selfridge

So, Ellen Love has become a "serious" actress, which means when she's not starring in plays publicly slandering her former lover, she runs around in boho chic maxi dresses and long necklaces. The lace trim might be a little fussy for today, but the rest of this 1910s look totally works in the now. Just one tip, Ellen...should you and your dress find yourself in the 2010s, our defamation laws have gotten a little tougher. You might want to find yourself a good modern lawyer. — Jen Luby

Vampire Diaries

Man, senior year of high school is rough. Taking the SATs, applying to college, adjusting to life as a vampire, hunting for a cure for vampirism, trying to stop an all-powerful bad guy, shutting off your emotions to become a soulless monster, being tortured back into feeling things again ... and that's all before your best friend brings down the wall between the living and the dead. Honestly, it's a good thing Elena went vamp at the end of last season, because if she weren't immortal, the girl would have some major bags under her eyes and plenty grey hairs by now.

This might not be the most jaw-dropping, fashion-forward dress ever, but for a post-graduation dress, it's perfect. It's like how an actual teenager would dress, if they had a personal stylist rather than 30 minutes at Forever 21 before their mom picks them up. The white lace is saved from being too precious - or too virginal - by the plunging neckline and short hemline. The simple silver accessories are a rarity these days (see: Abrams, Vanessa; Montgomery, Aria) but it's nice to see accessories that don't compete for attention with the outfit or with the wearer.

And no, I totally didn't pick this outfit as an excuse to post this blurry shot of the dress with a shirtless Damon in the foreground. I have no idea what you're talking about. — Amanda Smith

A female detective needs to look and act tough, but there's no reason why can't take a walk on the feminine side, too. Joan nails that mix with this black leather jacket, sleek black tights, and boots (tough), paired with a bow-print shirt (feminine). You can go shopping and "do lunch" with her, and afterwards, confidently walk down a dark alley, knowing she will kick the ass of anyone who dares harass you. Heck, she even has to prop up a blubbering Sherlock when he sees a "ghost" at the end of the episode. Sigh, Lucy Liu has to take care of everything on this show, doesn't she? — Kim Humes

How I Met Your Mother

OMG, #wemetthemother. And she's the most adorably doe-eyed pixie ever. I applaud the casting choice (you know Ted would go for "cute", not "hot") and does she not look like a cross between Robin and Lily? Clearly, Mother is a laid-back sort of gal, what with her worn-in boots and sweet crochet dress, but the bright yellow umbrella screams "QUIRKY!" Plus, Cristin Milioti plays the ukulele, so strap in for lots of goofy shenanigans and fit-n-flare dresses next season. — Jen Luby

Nashville

In the land of sequin, glitter, rhinestones, and more sequins, it can sometimes be hard to tell who's best dressed vs worst dressed. Tacky abounds, y'know? But when Maddie showed off her father/daugther dance dress, it not only took Rayna and Teddy's breaths away, it took mine too!

First of all, it was highly appropriate for a 13 year old. And you know how we like appropriateness around here. Second, it was shiny and glittery without being over the top. And don't even get me started on her adorbs up-do. For being a superstar's daughter, Maddie could have totally come out looking like a Lourdes or even a Willow Smith. Thankfully, she kept it tasteful. Stay classy, Nashville. — Kate O'Leary

I don't know about you, but as soon as I get on a plane, my style factor plummets from Prada to Skymall. But not Dr. Zoe Hart! She's rocking the chic-ly serious blazer with a relaxed fit blouse underneath, plus some artfully ripped jeans. Not only did she not bring a snack for the plane, she's reading an actual book. AND performing emergency procedures on a fellow passengers! Meanwhile, sitting in a row behind her is me, wrapped up my University of Maryland sweatpants and hoodie, eating the complimentary peanuts, and reading Skymall. Zoe, we have so much to learn from you. — Matt Solyst

Modern Family

On last week's Modern Family, Lily got $100 for her tooth because the tooth fairy (*coughCAMcough*) had a bit too much vino. Luckily, her dads have a niece who's willing to don a pink wig, crown, wings, and a tutu and play the tooth fairy (I know, Cam was secretly devastated he couldn't do it). It's too bad that Haley tripped up and "tooths" instead of "teeth" because nothing gets past Lily and her clutch, which transitions seamlessly from daycare to bedtime while holding crayons...and a hundred dollar bill. — Steph Au

Mr Selfridge

This week's period costume goodness is brought to you by Lady Mae, who does a little light shopping/scheming in this fetching navy day dress, complete with a huge HBIC hat. Go back and watch the episode. With feathers like that, she had no trouble pursuading the fuddy-duddy bankers to take Mr. Selfridge's crazy American ideas into consideration.

BY THE WAY, did you notice that later in the episode she re-wore the aubergine gown from the pilot? And while a red carpet situation is generally an opportunity to report snark on our stars' styles, that's hard to do when there's a theme afoot (this year's was Punk: Chaos to Couture). So instead, we wondered — what would their characters say about these looks? Would they totally wear that, or would they cluck in disapproval?

Oh, honey. So this week, Philip cemented his fake relationship with Martha (and convinced her to bug her FBI boss's office) by agreeing to marry her. Like, that day. After the worlds shortest engagement, they had the world's most awkward wedding, featuring Elizabeth and Granny as Philip's fake family members/witnesses. Even a desperate singleton like Martha had to have been a little sad about this courthouse wedding. At least she was working the retro 80s glamour with this baby blue dress (and matching blue eyeshadow). Too bad she's not allowed to tell anyone they got married, or live together. Also, shame how the entire thing is just a lie to get her to betray her country. Oh, honey. — Ann Foster

Elementary

This week Sherlock and Watson try to solve the mystery of Watson's dress. Where did the shoulders go? Why are the sleeves half made of lace? Is it a shirt dress gone horribly wrong? Unfortunately, it's a mystery that will remain unsolved. Much like why Sherlock is determined to hide how hot he actually is behind shirts buttoned too high. — Lesley-Anne Steeleworthy

Scandal

Seeing as Liv spent 95% of this week’s episode in a hospital gown, it was time for Abby to step up her fashion game. She stoically took on the responsibilities of helping a distraught Huck AND dressing to impress. Abby’s speech to Huck left much to be desired, but her 60s inspired hair paired with peasant-style top and high-waisted skirt truly hit the mark. Abby, keep showcasing this style, and I’ll listen to your depressing pep talks anytime.
— Terry Beasley

This week, Harry's philandering and partying ways caught up with him in a spectacular auto accident, just after he was accosted by his former lady love, Ellen Love. Sure, she may have been doped up and pathetically groveling at Harry's feet, but she looked fab from the neck down in this timeless black sequined gown accented with an opal necklace and earrings. Opals are bad luck, Ellen...didn't anyone ever tell you that? Then again, it's probably your behavior and not your jewelry that have landed you in such a mess. Just a hunch. — Jen Luby

Project Runway

As this is Part I of this season's finale, i.e. the one with the full collections, you'd think I would pick one of the designers' creations as my fave of the week. But no. As soon as I saw this cat-head brooch on Michelle, all the other outfits disappeared from my memory. Ask anyone who has talked to me longer than 5 minutes — I am a crazy cat lady, not to mention a lover of quirky accessories. What about the rest of her outfit? Who CARES?! Cat. Brooch, people. This girl could do an entire collection just based on this brooch and I would buy every piece. Here's my tip for making it work, Michelle - just stick this cat's head on every outfit you show at Lincoln Center and you'll be sure to win the whole thing! — Kim Humes

Vampire Diaries

Guess what, guys? It's prom season in Mystic Falls! And with any prom comes dress drama. Elena may have stolen Caroline's first dress (that gorgeous Theia gown at right) but Caroline has her very own fairy godmother — Klaus. And Klaus definitely succeeded in fulfilling Caroline's wish for a dress "fit for a Princess". The seed pearls, intricate beading and mermaid tulle skirt are gorgeous, and suit Caroline even better than her old gown. Suck it, Elena.
— Steph Au

This week, Lily was all arrivederci! to her jeans and sweaters as she embarked on an Italian fantasy sequence. She may have been indecisive about moving to Rome, but I'm sure of two things: 1) blue is really her color, and 2) she looks adorable in a skirt. I hearby request more Dressed Up for Art Shows Lily, because real talk, fashion is more fun when you're shaking hands and selling paintings as opposed to changing diapers and folding baby clothes. — Carla Bordereis

Modern Family

Pretty sure it's my love for all things Cam (and not my love of obnoxiously loud shirts) that's making it so hard to shy away from Cam's mossy green shirt and his "I'm sexy and I know it" attitude. Yes, he may look like he belongs under a disco ball, and his shirt still has solid color cuffs (gah, pet peeve), but I'm actually digging the pattern and color combo. It's almost wearable in the real world! And, whatever...if you can outshine Haley when she's standing next to you in a super mini skirt, then you rock, man! — Lauren Viscomi

Nashville

Scarlett is always looking sweet and folksy, but she knocks it out of the park with the outfit she wears to celebrate her new record deal. The mint blouse has just the right amount of sparkle, and the color is a dream against her porcelain skin and blonde ringlets. The sheer panel skirt and cowboy boots dress it down juuuust enough country for some impromptu karaoke at a Nashville dive bar. A new deal with Rayna, a handsome man on her arm, an amazing mix and match wardrobe — this girl is on top of the world, and rightly so. — Lauren Harari

Mayor Lavon Hayes is trying to make Bluebell a spring break destination (For who? Forrest Gump?) and while I'm tempted to show various pictures of Dr. Hart reliving the wild college days she never had, I will instead focus on her wardrobe. Observe as Zoe bravely sports horizontal stripes on a simple yet striking green top. However, the real fashion gem is her belt — notice how the cream color pops out amongst the dark green top and burgundy pants. So much classier than a Señor Frog's t-shirt. — Matt Solyst

Mr Selfridge

In a sea of white lace sleeves and prim and pale ribboned hats, Valerie stood out this week in a rather mannish and modern outfit. Her black bowler hat and polka dot tie wink to a gender-bending sensibility that only a French woman working in a NYC ad agency could pull off. I'm certain there are London hipsters who scoured vintage stores for all these pieces (esp. the doctor-style bag), and are rocking them at London's hottest art openings as we speak. If Val were alive today, she'd be one of those impossibly cool gals on street style blogs and in fashion show front rows. — Kim Humes

Scandal

Liv watches her SPB (Secret President Boyfriend) declare his love for his wife on national television and then does what any normal girl would do: she picks up some burgers (as if, like Liv eats burgers) and heads over to Noel’s Jake’s apartment. What goes well with burgers? Liv’s modern take on the classic trench. Her trench’s collar and belt could not be more flattering. I’d give up my SPB for that trench in a heartbeat. — Terry Beasley

The second installment of the reunion show aired last night, and several questionable ensembles appeared. Lisa and Kim, you're at the top of my list. Lisa must be SUPER busy with Vanderpump Rules — so busy that she couldn't find a new dress after this one last a battle with a paper shredder. Meanwhile, Kim is obviously channeling her child star roots with a pageant dress a la Honey Boo Boo. Get this girl some go-go juice! Reality misteps aside, Yolanda was (as per usual) the star of the show with her tasteful hair, makeup, and a body-conscious yet age-appropriate dress. Sleep tight, botoxed beauties. We'll see you next season! — Anne Forman

Say Yes to the Dress

Or, the Original Flavor SYTTD is, anyway. Contrary to all logic and reason, Say Yes to the Dress Atlanta's Bridals by Lori has a stunningly well-curated collection of dresses, leaving it up to the brides to bring the tacky. And oh, how they try. But not even this bride, dead-set on wearing a camo sash to her wedding, could trash this gorgeous dress. I love the vintage lace look along the hem, and the bodice's slight sweetheart neckline is much more flattering than a straight bodice. At the end of the day, the bride's gimmick didn't overshadow the dress, but it did give us an excellent Monte bon mot: "Camouflage on a wedding dress? What's next? Are you going to strap a dead deer to the hood of the limo!?" — Amanda Smith

For real, we should all thank Harry for revolutionizing the shopping experience. (Which he learned while a partner at Marshall Field's in Chicago. Go away, Macy's.) Anywho, I'm giving our first "best outfit" win to socialite/pot-stirrer Lady Mae Loxley for this strikingly seductive aubergine and lace frock. She might be adorned with Gibson Girl hair and sumptuous jewelry, but I'm guessing Lady Mae is no lady. — Jen Luby

The life of a spy doesn't leave much room to be fashion-forward — always having to blend in, all the clandestine meetings outdoors in all weather at all hours, and the constant threat of pesky blood spatter stains. I'm not a spy, but I'm guessing many of them wear black leather jackets. So, one could argue that this ensemble is rather boring, however, I think it rocks because a) it's on Kerri Russell, and b) you really can't go wrong with a black leather jacket. Works for everyone in any situation. Plus it matches her gun. Besides, we should enjoy the tasteful clothes while we can...the rest of the 80s are coming. — Kim Humes

How I Met Your Mother

So, Robin's new thing appears to be body-con yet tasteful dresses, such as this grey tweed number. Sure, it's perfect for work, but I appreciate the fact that she wore it during her dance-off with Marshall. The high waist is super flattering and the exposed zipper? Such a modern touch. You go on with your bad self Robin, whether it's the evening news or a dance contest. — Carla Bordereis

Vampire Diaries

The best thing about no-emotions-Elena? Her new haircut, obvi. I know I feel a million times more sassy after a trim, and clearly the undead do, as well. And peep those equally gorgeous lace-up boots. If being a vampire means being able to effortlessly run around NYC in heeled boots, I'm all in. Paired with the denim and perfectly tailored blazer, we're hoping to see more of this Elena. — Steph Au
