This recent addition to the reality TV landscape follows the lives of six privileged princesses in their late 20s/early 30s, all of whom still live at home with mommy and daddy, waiting for the day when a handsome Wall Street exec will sweep them off their feet and their parent's payroll. So far we've only endured been treated to two episodes, and there was the usual amount of drink throwing and back stabbing we've come to expect from this genre.

Intricacies of the premise aside, let's talk about the clothes. Admittedly, all six princesses subscribe to the "sexier/higher/blingier/MOAR!" school of dressing, but there are slight variations, which we've identified here:

 

Amanda: The Cougar in Training

Amanda hit it on the nose when she called her mother, Babs, a cougar. "I'm notta cougah!" she cried in defense, standing amidst a sea of animal patterns, body con cuts, and so very much bling at Wearhouse, the store she owns. Despite being a (relatively) young 27, Amanda is quickly tripping down Mom's same primrose path.

 

 

Erica: The Sexy(est) One

Erica's personality may be harsh, but her look is soft with a sensual edge. If Amanda's specialty is "Mature Sexy", then Erica's vibe is "Fresh Sexy". Just heed the other Princesses' tales and don't leave your boyfriend alone with her.

 

 

Ashlee: The Bold One

Oh goodness. This one is a piece of work, and I'm not entirely sure that reality tv editing is solely to blame. Making a manicurist carry you to your car because you refuse to walk in flats? Calling your mother because there's dirt on the blanket at your weekend rental? Thank goodness Ashlee gives us colorful statement necklaces and bold neons to look at, because girlfriend wears on my nerves.

 

 

Joey: The Classic One

Joey is poor, and like all poor people, she owns just one Chanel bag (see below). Well, maybe she has more, but so far we've only spotted the one. She also seems to be the most normal of the bunch, with an actual job and a more down-to-earth outlook on life. Her style is similarly low key, consisting of classic pieces and flattering cuts.

 

 

Chanel: The Accessorized One

I'm gonna say it: I like Chanel. Like Joey, she seems to possess a reasonable streak, and her desire to host a Shabbos dinner for the Princesses was endearing. Unlike her namesake, Chanel subscribes to a "more is more" accessorizing mantra. Not only does she bring the daytime glamour with sequined blazers and the superlong earrings below, she's apparently planning to launch her own line of headbands.

 

 

Casey: The Artsy One

Casey made her debut in the second episode as the Sweet, Sensitive One. Perhaps a little too sensitive, as she's still smarting over old high school wounds. Which I'm sure that the producers didn't bring up at all, in an effort to raise the ratings stir the pot. She might work as a waitress at 1Oak, but both her inner and outer leanings are firmly boho-chic.

Mm-hmm. Pretty Little Liars is back for another year (semester? How long have these broads been in school?) of studying, dating, and applying to colleges. Oh, and also some light murder/stalking. They didn't offer that track when I was in high school, so I sometimes forget how things are for the Modern Student.

PLL is one of our (and your!) favorite shows, so we can all guess how the plot will go down: there will be mysterious texts, creepily placed creepy objects, inappropriate adult-teenager interactions, and from the looks of it, at least one more funeral. Or memorial service? Hey, it's Rosewood! Never underestimate the town's ability to organize a funereal occasion at the drop of a skinny belt.

But what of the fashion? What do you think our fearless foursome will sport this season?

 

Hanna

Take another gander at the sheer LBD action up above. With her bold aesthetic and her sassy one-liners, Hannah is on a speeding (murder) train to becoming the Samantha Jones of the group. Sadly, Ashley Benson is too busy to be considered for that role on The Carrie Diaries, which is a shame, because we're pretty sure she'd nail it.

 

Emily

We see that Sporty Spice continues to show off those swimming shoulders (as she's been wont to do lately) but she's upgraded the basic-jeans-and-tee combo for interesting prints and cuts. Still comfy, still stylish, still (probably) easily unhinged.

 

Spencer

Oh, heyyyyyy Spence. We were just talking about the mentally unbalanced. Spencer Hastings had a really bad year. Like, really bad. And we're guessing that despite the lovely ensembles shown here, she's one Totally Not Dead Boyfriend away from dirty leggings and unwashed hair. That's why you didn't get into UPenn, Hastings.

 

Aria

And lastly, darling Aria, with nary a feather to be found. Dealing with middle-aged problems when you're a high schooler has a way of making one reevaluate accessory choices. She may be shockingly casual in with the army green/camo situation above, but we're guessing she still can't resist the siren call of pyramid studs.

ABC stepped up the summer soap game with last night's premiere of Mistresses, and ok, the plot is nothing new (four fashionable friends + life's curveballs!), but we'll tune in again for the solid wardrobes. Golf claps to lead costume designer Roemehl Hawkins.

 

Savi: The Serious One

Alyssa Milano brings the starpower as Savannah, a lawyer who respects birthday gift-giving protocol, but isn't above flashing her coworker in order to get out of a little pesky paperwork, and later has sexytimes with said coworker on her desk. "Savi" and her husband Harry (played by Aussie soap star Brett Tucker) are riding the infertility roller coaster, but we bet while Savi's boning the Hot Black Lawyer at her firm, Harry's knocking boots with the Haughty Forgetful Hostess at his restaurant.

Impending dramz aside, if you're a corporate working stiff, you'd do well to dress like Savi — tailored, but with a feminine edge, as seen here in her body-skimming, double-breasted, not-quite-a-peplum number, or this Sand Mayers dress. Garter belt optional.

 

Josslyn: The Sexy One

Tousled hair? Check. Bandage dresses and bustiers as work wear? Check. Sleeping her way to the top? Big ol' checkmark. Josslyn escaped the pilot without revealing A Big Dark Secret (banging your married boss is de rigueur in soap land), but we're guessing she'll eventually spiral out of control and end up in rehab, or something.

If you'd also like to dress with no concept of day or night, how about this strapless Herve Leger dress? It's only a matter of time before Joss brings the Daytime Sequins out to play, so might as well beat her to the punch.

 

April: The Boho One

Just as widowed April was ready to get back in the saddle, she's suddenly haunted by creepy phone calls from her ghost husband. Ha! Kidding! They're actually from her late husband's mistress/mother of his lovechild. Whew. Somebody cancel that appointment with Ghost Hunters. Anywho, April has a definite style pattern. Can you spot it?

You guys, she is literally wearing the same thing in both pictures. A+ for consistency, I guess. If you also lean boho-chic, layer yo'self with pieces like this Missoni poncho sweater and a vintage-y statement bracelet.

 

Karen: The Casual(?) One

I'll be honest, I'm having a hard time putting Dr. Karen Kim in a neat little box. "Casual" isn't quite right (she mostly wore tasteful, inoffensive work wear throughout the episode), and "Conflicted" would be redundant, as all the ladies but Josslyn seem to have major probs.

So for now, I'll say that she's The Nice One who wears Nice Things and also tries to do Nice Things...that end up backfiring. You guys, don't sleep with your dying patients and then prescribe questionable meds to them, ok? But by all means do pair skinny jeans with a buttery leather blazer.

We thought we were being clever when we declared Naomi "the Samantha Jones of 90210," but it turns out ALM is the front-runner on, oh, every other blog. And for good reason:

Skills - 5/5: If you've ever seen an episode of 90210, you've seen a Naomi Clark party/fundraiser/unnecessarily glam campground. Both gals have Rolodexes and resources they're not afraid to use.
Style - 5/5: The bold prints! The colored pantsuits! The affected manner of speech! Are we talking about Naomi or Samantha? It's so hard to tell.
Sex - 3/5: While Samantha's sexcapades were more for pleasure, Naomi hopped into bed purely to get what she wants. Remember that awful tryst with the hippie son of CU's Dean of Admissions? Or, I dunno, the start of her relationship with Max?

Total Naomi-Samantha Factor: 4.34/5

 

Blake Lively

Gossip Girl has been off the air for many months, and its former golden girl is busy being married and hawking cupcakes and making things in her really expensive oven. But just in case Blake wants to put down the apron and get back into acting, we're adding her name to this list.

Skills - 1/5: Oh sure, Serena threw a few parties on Gossip Girl, but there's no way she could have (would have?) pulled them off without Dorota. Let's face it, Sam is an intelligent self-made woman who's hired by clients like Serena, and then bitches about them during brunch.
Style - 3/5: Both women were known to don a bodycon dress, but Serena's casual-day style was far more boho chic. Tailored pantsuits? Not her jam.
Sex - 3/5: Miss van der Woodsen liked herself some sexytime action, but she fell in wuv way more often than Samantha ever did. The closest Sam came to coupledom was when Smith bought her that big ring in SATC, The First Movie — The One That Didn't Suck.

Total Serena-Samantha Factor: 2.34/5

 

Dianna Agron

Not so much unemployed as underemployed, Dianna's got time on her hands ever since Glee sent Quinn Fabray off to the Island of Tertiary Characters.

Skills - 2/5: She's not completely dumb (she got into Yale) but she does have a thing for making bad decisions that Samantha would have deftly avoided (see: teen pregnancy, driving while texting, etc).
Style - 1/5: Samantha does not do cardigans. Nor does she do side-braids and ankle boots, but Quinn continues to torture us with all of the above, season after season. The ensemble she wore for Schue's faux wedding reception is as close as she's ever come to Samantha's flashy style.
Sex - 3.5/5: Quinn gave it up for Puck and Finn, and then she played around with Santana, so it's safe to say that Q is not the virginal church-going gal she pretended to be at the top of Season 1.

Total Quinn-Samantha Factor: 2.17/5


India de Beaufort

Jane By Design was yanked after only one season, but resident villianness India Jourdain left an impression of Maleficent curls and a ruthless work ethic. What's India de Beaufort up to these days? Nothing? Excellent, let's see if she's up to the task of playing Samantha!

Skills - 3/5: In case you forgot, India J. was the scheming bitch at Donovan-Decker. She could ruin you in the blink of an eye, unless you're a 17-year old girl with pluck and pinwheel arms. Seriously India, you were disgraced by the entire DD house while Jane gets a trip to Paris? Samantha Jones would never let some high school intern adorned in sequins make her look like a fool.
Style - 4/5: India de Beaufort loses a point for India J's lack of brights, but overall, she's got Sam's tailored dominatrix steez down. Plus, both she and Kim are British, and that's got to count for something, right?
Sex - 4/5: India's corporate skills might pale next to Samantha Jones, but there is one category where these ladies are neck and neck, and that's what Salt'n'Pepa were talking about: sex. She saw her former piece Jeremy make googly eyes at Jane and swooped in like a hawk that hadn't eaten in weeks. And look at all those S&M stylings above — that woman is a danger cat.

Total India-Samantha Factor: 3.67/5

So let's focus on this coat instead. When the Pritchetts sneak into the Dunphy house and she's dressed...like Little Red Riding Hood. Minus the hood. Gloria picks the lock without breaking a sweat while knocking it out of the park with this fire engine red spring trench over a blue dress featuring black octopi-inspired tentacles. She springs the door open with a cool "no questions" directed at Jay and Manny. Guys, I'm convinced she has a back story where she's a paid assassin for the Yakuza. — Ritchie Po

 

Mr Selfridge

So, Ellen Love has become a "serious" actress, which means when she's not starring in plays publicly slandering her former lover, she runs around in boho chic maxi dresses and long necklaces. The lace trim might be a little fussy for today, but the rest of this 1910s look totally works in the now. Just one tip, Ellen...should you and your dress find yourself in the 2010s, our defamation laws have gotten a little tougher. You might want to find yourself a good modern lawyer.  — Jen Luby

 

Vampire Diaries

Man, senior year of high school is rough. Taking the SATs, applying to college, adjusting to life as a vampire, hunting for a cure for vampirism, trying to stop an all-powerful bad guy, shutting off your emotions to become a soulless monster, being tortured back into feeling things again ... and that's all before your best friend brings down the wall between the living and the dead. Honestly, it's a good thing Elena went vamp at the end of last season, because if she weren't immortal, the girl would have some major bags under her eyes and plenty grey hairs by now.

This might not be the most jaw-dropping, fashion-forward dress ever, but for a post-graduation dress, it's perfect. It's like how an actual teenager would dress, if they had a personal stylist rather than 30 minutes at Forever 21 before their mom picks them up. The white lace is saved from being too precious - or too virginal - by the plunging neckline and short hemline. The simple silver accessories are a rarity these days (see: Abrams, Vanessa; Montgomery, Aria) but it's nice to see accessories that don't compete for attention with the outfit or with the wearer.

And no, I totally didn't pick this outfit as an excuse to post this blurry shot of the dress with a shirtless Damon in the foreground. I have no idea what you're talking about. — Amanda Smith

OMG, #wemetthemother. And she's the most adorably doe-eyed pixie ever. I applaud the casting choice (you know Ted would go for "cute", not "hot") and does she not look like a cross between Robin and Lily? Clearly, Mother is a laid-back sort of gal, what with her worn-in boots and sweet crochet dress, but the bright yellow umbrella screams "QUIRKY!" Plus, Cristin Milioti plays the ukulele, so strap in for lots of goofy shenanigans and fit-n-flare dresses next season. — Jen Luby

 

Nashville

In the land of sequin, glitter, rhinestones, and more sequins, it can sometimes be hard to tell who's best dressed vs worst dressed. Tacky abounds, y'know? But when Maddie showed off her father/daugther dance dress, it not only took Rayna and Teddy's breaths away, it took mine too!

First of all, it was highly appropriate for a 13 year old. And you know how we like appropriateness around here. Second, it was shiny and glittery without being over the top. And don't even get me started on her adorbs up-do. For being a superstar's daughter, Maddie could have totally come out looking like a Lourdes or even a Willow Smith. Even a desperate singleton like Martha had to have been a little sad about this courthouse wedding.
